Part 2 of making the Mets relevant again

Unfortunately for Met fans, I do not think this process will be immediate. There have been too many years, drafts, and 7-figure checks that have passed for that to be a reality. Here is the thing I would do:

-The farm system and scouting basically has to be gutted out completely.

I would be looking at hiring people from several organizations that have had a long reputation for popping out players into the big leagues. Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Florida, Atlanta, Milwaukee and San Francisco (pitching)are organizations that come to mind . All of these franchises have drafted very well and knows how to groom their farm systems in ways the Mets obviously have not been able to. The more ideas and philosophies will only help.

They also know how to evaluate talent. They know which prospects to make untouchable, and which ones to deal off to bring in someone in the winter or around the trading deadline. The Mets have not been able to do this since the Santana deal, mostly because they do not even have the prospects to land a top player. Forget about this current regime knowing when to deal prospects as well. Miledge was the biggest example.

This really starts with the Amateur Draft. In the new regime, it would be taking the best evaluated talent, high school or college players. This also means, having our first round draft picks to stockpile the farm system (See Budget next). Bring in the best talent, even if we have to pay over the slot that MLB has been suggesting. If we are going to spend money, spend it properly, and that means from the ground up.

We also will keep that pipeline opened from Puerto Rico, South America, and Dominican Republic. Anyway or edge we can use to build the system up, we have to do effectively and properly. Sign as many young talents as possible, and eventually, some of them will blossom into major league talent.

-Start to spend money, especially the payroll wisely.

The Mets are able to field a 150 million dollar payroll. They are blessed in this culture of baseball, that we are one of the big boys when it comes to revenue. That does not mean you can spend it foolishly though. It is time to allocate these funds properly. That means, no more recycling washed up players, no more rethread pitchers, and no more trading for 6 million dollar a year set up men with an arm issue that has a black flag on it darker than the ace of spades.

We would take it easy on free agency for the short term. Keep our draft picks, and spend the money within the system. This is not a team that will be a World Series contender if we sign an outfielder with pop and a starting pitcher. If you believe this, then you have no idea what you are talking about.

The next is to learn how to budget the payroll properly. No more trying re-tread pitchers(Livan Hernandez, Tim Redding, Oliver Perez), no more reclamation projects(Jeff Francoeur). To go to an even more extent, no more 8 digit salaries for pitchers that go 1 inning at a time (KRod, Wagner).

The one thing I will give Omar Minaya credit with. He locked up Jose Reyes and David Wright to long term contracts. This is one thing that must be continued in the new regime. Once we get the farm machine running, we need to keep this young player’s long term. Build a core foundation. Only after that, can we start bringing in the Matt Hollidays or John Lackeys of the FA market to put the team over the top.

- Entertain offers for OF Carlos Beltran this off-season.

There may not be a big market out there for a player that was injured more than half the season, but Beltran is still a Five-Tool Outfielder that could warrant interest from contending teams. Now, I am not saying that we just take the best offer, but if a contending team with good prospects (like San Francisco) called us up and put together a good package that would start the process of re-tooling the organization, I would have to take it, and I would personally fly Beltran to JFK myself.

-Get into the Aroldis Chapman sweepstakes

Here is the perfect example of what the Mets should be going after. The Cuban defector is a 21 (probably 23 but still) starting pitcher that throws around 100 mph. He is also lefty flamethrower, which is as rare as a Palestinian liking an Israeli.

Chapman will only cost money. No draft picks required. This is the type of talent the Mets do not see in the first round of the amateur drafts. Scoop him up, and hopefully he can eventually come up and learn from the best lefty in the business, Johan Santana.

This is also a move that the fan base of the Mets can get behind. This is the type of move that will make the Met fans anticipate; bringing in a 21 year old lefty that if the franchise gets lucky, can become the young ace for a decade.

- Stop making Citi-Field into a tribute of another organizations history.

This is one is more pointed at ownership. Citi Field is gorgeous. Wilpon got his dream stadium. He just has to realize that the Brooklyn Dodgers were never part of this franchise. While it is nice to remember the past, there is more stuff to honor the Bk. Dodgers at the field than the Mets, who in 40 years do have some good history to honor.
Am I the only one that thinks it is a slap in the fact that there is a Jackie Robinson Rotunda, and nothing for the Met legend himself Tom Seaver? Mr. Wilpon, Seaver, not Robinson is a big reason why this franchise is so loved by the fans that line your pockets in US currency. I am sorry, but kids taking pictures with Mr. Met at a shrine for a non-Met, just does not seem right...

The State of the Union Address for The Sportstown......

Welcome to Sportstown.

This is a blog that will discuss the topics of past, present, and future, of all the sports this country has to offer, in a unique way. We will toss in a bit of pop culture, movies, a bit of the degenerate bug of betting, and yes, I am able to talk sports in both the fans point of view, and I can dabble with all the numbers as well. So, first, let me tell you an idea on how some of my philosophies go:

National League baseball is the pure form of baseball. It offers the Chess-like matchup that the game really is. Find me the politican that would ban the DH through legal ways, hes got my vote.

Hockey is by far, the best sport to watch live. If you are a closed minded nitwit, and have been stubborn to go see a hockey game at an arena, take my advice. The next two weeks of your life will be learning the sport, and wondering why ESPN hasnt picked it back up.

Paul Newman is an American Hero. Not only did he live a practically selfless life and was as money as you can possibly be on the screen, he gave us the best sports movie ever. Think about it, this legend in his 50's outta nowhere did this crude, slapstick comedy about hockey of all sports. Slapshot is the best sports movie ever. I dare anyone to debate me on this one!

All fantasy sports drafts are this generations equivalance to Dungeons and Dragons from the 1980's, except now there is a possibility that you will get laid. Dont you love being a nerd in this day and age?

ESPN is the best, and worst things to happen to sports fans ever. They gave us access to the sports we love, but nowadays, they shove stupid, non-important crap down our throats at an Ussain Bolt sprinting speed. I got it that Pedro Martinez is a Phillie...... after the 45th time in 4 minutes I saw it on the ticker on the bottom of my TV as BREAKING NEWS!!!

I want to see a Dream Matchup. I would bet any amount of money that the '92 Dream Team would wax the floor with the Redeem Team by 20 points. Moral of the story is, present athletes might be more athletic, but they have no idea how to play the game. Want to see how defense was played, the mid-range jump shot, and how the low post should be played, go on Youtube, and catch all the old footage.

The next Writer that has a vote for the Baseball Hall of Fame that decides not to vote for a first ballot guy because Babe Ruth was not put in the Hall unamiously, should be shot on Pay Per View. If that is the only reasoning you have for not voting for Ricky Henderson into Cooperstown, you are a moron. Plain and simple.

The terms Parlay, Reverse, and Teaser, are the reasons why your bookie just got that brand new Mercedes, and Las Vegas still puts up new Hotels.

I do not dislike the Yankees, Red Sox, Lakers, Red Wings, Cowboys, Steelers, just about any national bandwagon team there is. I just dislike their fans.

I DO hate anything Philadelphia. Im sorry, how can you like a city that needed a judge and jail cell, inside their own football stadium?

Brett Favre shouldnt retire, he should just die. I am praying for the game this season where someone on the Packers deliver one of those Madden-like Late Hits on him, and get handed one of the video games injuries. If I see Brett Favre out forever (Broken Head) on that little ESPN ticker. I will need a diaper.

Baseball might be this country's national pastime, the NFL might make the most money, but this country's heart is College Football .

I really want to get into Soccer. Whenever the US National Team is playing, I do watch. I just feel that nothing short of winning the World Cup one year, or the United States producing the next Pele, will get the general public involved.

Is it sad that the past decade's best comedian has been a rubber dog puppet, or was it just that funny?

I still find it almost unbelieveable that in The Karate Kid, that Johnny, the blonde haired, blue eyed pretty boy, would be the leader of a karate gang, when Dutch was the complete tough guy/bad ass, that kinda resembles who Sensei Kreese was 20 years earlier.

The 1970's were the Golden Age of movies. The 1980's gave us the cheesy, enojoyable movies we can watch 350,000 times. The 1990's gave us a smaller, mixture of both. I still dunno what the 00's have offered us.

I believe that theres alot more Tim Donaghy's in professional sports than the public would like to believe. Seriously, what guy in this world wouldnt take a large sum of money just to make sure that a team wins by 7 instead of 4?

I really do believe that David Stern sent Gary Bettman into the NHL to sabotage the rising sport. People forget, in the early 1990's, the NHL was the IT sport. ESPN gave it coverage, and it exploded. Then Gary Betmann came to become the Commissioner, and he, and the Trap, KILLED this sport for the next fifteen years.

The best football player I have ever seen in his prime was Barry Sanders, with Lawrence Taylor and Jerry Rice being close seconds.

The best baseball player I have ever seen overall is Barry Bonds, steroids or not, hes one of the best 10 players to ever go on a diamond. But, the best player to watch out on a field in my lifetime, was Ken Griffey Jr. before his hamstrings left him for a different time zone. The guy was a kid playing in a playground, and to this day, baseball has not had a player they could market like Griffey. Apologies to Derek Jeter.

The best hockey player I ever seen was Mario Lemiuex, not Wayne Gretzky. But, if I were a GM, and could pick anyone ever to start a franchise, I would take Mark Messier.

The best basketball player ever in my lifetime is so obvious, lets not waste space here.......

Im gonna anger some people here, but NASCAR or any form of Car Racing is not a sport. Making 2000 left turns in one day, does not qualify you to be an athlete. It is an event, it is a skill, but it is not a sport. If Car Racing is a sport, so is playing Playstation 3.

The same thing applies to Poker. Now, I love poker as much as the next guy, but when we see Topps make up World Series of Poker trading cards, and we see Phil Hellmuth's annual stats on the back of the card, and it smells like that old piece of gum they use to give in card packs, THEN it is a sport.

I am still wondering how Barry Zito got that contract from the Giants....... same thing with Vernon Wells with the Blue Jays.

If you share similar views and sense of humor as I do, feel free to stay tuned to The Sports Town......

If you already hate my views...... you should really stay tuned.....

If you are a NASCAR fan, dont worry. I will probaly never bring it up again. (I might be lying. Too easy of a punching bag.)

Sincerely,

Steve Townsend, The Mayor of Sportstown
